The facts about Lead

  • When it comes to interior and exterior painting, lead can affect children’s brains and developing nervous systems, causing reduced IQ, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems. Lead is also harmful to adults.
  • People are exposed to lead through dust most commonly. People can also get lead in their bodies from lead in soil or paint chips. Lead dust is often invisible.
  • Lead-based paint was used in more than 38 million homes until it was banned for residential use in 1978.
  • Projects that disturb painted surfaces can create dust and endanger you and your family. Don’t let this happen to you!

Protecting you from lead — its the law!

In 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency issued a new rule under the Toxic Substances Control Act regarding “lead-based paint hazards created by renovation, repair, and painting activities that disturb lead-based paint in housing and child-occupied facilities.” The rule, which has an effective date of April 2010, directly affects general and specialty contractors by requiring them to be certified if they are performing work on a targeted facility and to provide warnings to let people know of the hazards. The EPA has been warning of fines up to $32,000 per day for using contractors not certified in lead renovation.
